VOTER SIGN-UP HITS 40-YEAR HIGH.(Capital Region)

Nearly 89,000 voters, a 40- year high in the county, will be registered to vote in the Tuesday general election.

County election Commissioners Salvatore J. Longo and Robert A. Brehm said Thursday the voter registration is the highest since 1952.

"A total of 89,553 county residents, 13,843 more than this same time last year, are registered this year," Longo said.

"The final surge of voter registrations during recent days enabled the county to exceed previous totals according to records at the Board of Elections," he added.

Brehm said 115,032 of the county's 149,285 residents are categorized as the voting age population.
