Fed: Coalition MPs seek tax cuts, spending

CANBERRA, Feb 20 AAP - Coalition MPs pushing for tax cuts and extra spending in this
year's budget have been bolstered by comments made by Reserve Bank governor Ian Macfarlane.

Mr Macfarlane told a parliamentary committee on Friday the federal surplus was sufficiently
strong to sustain a tax cut this year.

The market has speculated the government could post a whopping budget surplus of about
A$17 billion, up from a forecast of A$11.5 billion.
