The death toll in the stampede at a football stadium in Butembo in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 13 people, reports said. The trouble was sparked by one goalkeeper allegedly throwing muti between the opposing side's goalposts.
Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says sanctions against Zimbabwe will not be lifted, despite the signing of a power-sharing deal. He said it would depend on human rights progress and social and economic reconstruction. Smith welcomed the agreement signed by President Robert Mugabe and MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai as "modest progress".
