VIC: Training not a factor in Linton deaths, CFA report

MELBOURNE, Aug 9 AAP - Poor training was not a factor in the deaths of five volunteer
firefighters in western Victoria last year, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) said today.

CFA chief officer Trevor Roche said while the CFA may need to introduce more vigorous
training, lack of training was not a cause of the deaths at Linton.

The five volunteers from Geelong died when their truck was engulfed in flames while
battling the fire on December 2 last year.

At the time it was reported the firefighters were not told of a wind change because of a
problem with their radios.

However Mr Roche said the CFA had not identified any problems with the radios at Linton and
that human error may have led to their deaths.

He said an internal review of the incident had found there may be some problems with some
equipment and the culture of the organisation.

"Fire fighting is a risky business, it's a dangerous business and anybody who thinks steps
can be taken to ensure that this doesn't happen again doesn't recognise the reality of
fighting fires," Mr Roche told reporters.
